Hollywood lose in court against ISP in Australia
In 2009 AFACT, the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft representing several label studios including Village Roadshow, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros Entertainment, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, Disney Enterprises, Inc. and the Seven Network sued Australian ISP iiNet, claiming that they did nothing to stop its customers from sharing copyright media via BitTorrent.
Passing verdict today Justice Cowdroy admitted while studio’s copyrights had indeed been infringed upon, ISP did not authorize it, therefore could not be held responsible. Very valid example was presented: “Essentially an ISP should be considered similar to the postal service – they simply carry data in the form of packets, and that communication should be considered private”.
Well, we all know it’s not. We do not praise piracy, but we as Consumers must oppose to record labels charging more and more, with police enforcement leading to total surveillance with excuse of copyrights protection.
